Cutting and Herd Work with Terry Tietjen

Whether you're showing in the NCHA or any of the numerous Ranch Horse Associations, the fundamentals are the same.  We will start the day on the flag and move on to live cattle.  We will work on improving your ability to enter the herd, cut out your cow on the top, get your horse to hunt the middle of the cow and hold the proper position.  From beginners to advanced riders, there will be something for everyone and we will have fun doing it!!

Meet the Clinician

We have been in the horse business since 1994.  In the early years our focus was colt starting and working with horses that had people problems.  I’d like to say that I was self-taught, but I can’t.  I read and watched everything that I could get my hands on, from Monty Roberts, Buck Brannaman, Chris Cox, Clinton Anderson, Craig Cameron and many more.  Spending years of long days and hundreds of horses, working on being a better horseman.  I would try anything.  The main thing that I have learned from watching others and from all the horses I have trained is that it is not so much the technique or method.  It’s making sure your horse is mentally engaged, searching for the right answer and the release of pressure.

Over the years we have trained horses that have went on to be successful in just about every discipline; western, english, dressage, endurance, and pleasure riding.  To me, getting their minds trained, their bodies soft and your hands connected to their feet, is the key to your horse’s success in any given discipline.  Through the years our program has continually changed and evolved, but our mission has stayed the same.  We work every day to be a better horseman and train our horses to the best of their abilities.

In past years I have competed in colt starting competitions and the Extreme Mustang Makeover.  In recent years we have focused more on showing the Ranch Horse Futurity in the Iowa Quarter Horse Association.  We also show in the NCHA.  We have been blessed with success in the cutting pen as well as multiple Champion and Reserve Championships in the IQHA.

Teaching has always been a part of our training business. I’ve always felt it doesn’t matter how well you train the horse if the owner can’t ride it.  We teach individual lessons and clinics on basic horsemanship to advanced, helping them gain the ability to ride horses from green colts to finished ranch horses and cutters.
